Protein Skimmers![]() The DB ReefTech range of protein skimmers covers systems up to 10,000 litres with a variety of configuartions available for each size. The protein skimmers are designed to utilise either a recirculating aspirated pump or a single pass flow through a foam jet. The aspirated protein skimmers have a simple low pressure venturi located on the intake side of the pump, introducing air into the water stream passing into the pump intake. As the air and water passes through the impeller chamber of the pump, the impeller chops the air into fine bubbles. In the case of the foam jet skimmers, water from the pump is passed through the foam jet fitting, drawing a large volume of air in as small bubbles. It is essentially the same technique utilised by a venturi skimmer, however the foam jet can introduce more air for a given pump flowrate/pressure. Depending on the configuration of the protein skimmer, the pump may be the sole one required, acting as the feed and aerator, or acts as a dedicated aerator with an additional water feed required. Below is a table of the sizes and configurations available. Please click on the model number to see the full details, features and an image of the unit. If something is required that is not listed, please enquire about custom building or modification to your personal needs. Please note, customisation does not necessarily mean an increase in the price. Please contact your local Retail Outlet for availability and retail pricing of DB ReefTech protein skimmers. If you are unsure on some details provided here, what a protein skimmer is, what they are used for and how they work, then please see the Frequently Ask Questions. Unit specifications and design may be subject to change without notice. ConfigurationsThere are four protein skimmer configurations available from DB ReefTech; external (E), sump or external (SE), extra short sump (SX), and foam jet (FJ). The suitability of all of the configurations for a particular reef aquarium system is dependent on the space available and the intended location for installation.
InstallationEach of the different DB ReefTech protein skimmer configurations have some slightly different options available for installation. The extact suitable installation depends on the type of system (sump or no sump), preferred placement and space available for the protein skimmer. Diagrams and instructions detailing some of the possible methods of installation can be seen here, Installation. CustomisationIf you require something different from the standard unit specifications then that can be easily accommodated. Since each DB ReefTech unit is hand made, it is very easy to provide fully customisation to your requirements. This includes changing the dimensions to fit into a required space (such as limited height, footprint or shape) or creating a model/size that isn't currently a part of the advertised product range. Please note that customisation does not necessarily mean an additional cost. In the majority of cases it makes no difference at all as the labour and material required are not significantly altered. If you have any questions or comments on customisation, then do not hesitate to contact us. Frequently Asked QuestionsIf you still have any questions after reading the material presented here, then plese check to see if it is answered by the Frequently Asked Questions.
